Roots Picnic goers: Here's what you've been waiting for: The set times for Saturday's day-long concert at Festival Pier.

Important times: The Roots, who will play with Erykah Badu as part of their headlining set, go on at 9:15 p.m.

Donn T, Questlove's sister, is the first act on stage, at 12:30 in the afternoon.

For the first time, there are three stages this year, so there are some coflicts where you won't be able to be in two places at the same instant: rising RB-plus star Raury, for instance, goes on at 3:45 on the Harbor Stage, the same time star Dj legend Afrika Bambaataa hits on the Oasis stage.

Rapper A$AP Rocky hits at 6:20; DJ King Britt spins at 2:30; L.A. This article is from wwwphilly.comsongwriter Moses Sumney plays at 1.

My Inquirer Weekend section cover story about summer music, with more on the Picnic, is here.

The power of two: Philly's RJD2 and STS discuss their collaborative album

5/29/2015

It's a sunny Friday. Producer and composer RJD2 (real name, Ramble Jon Krohn) is in the midst of packing up. He's leaving Philadelphia, the city he's called home for over a decade, and moving back to his native Ohio.

He and his wife have a young son and he wants him to grow up around family. It's bittersweet for the acclaimed musician, notable for composing "A Beautiful Mine," the opening-credit theme for the recently wrapped AMC series "Mad Men."

The move comes on the heels of the May 5 release of "STS x RJD2," his collaborative album with Atlanta-bred, Philly-based rapper STS (a/k/a Sugar Tongue Slim; born Doncarlos Price). It showcases RJ's knack for genre-fusing compositions, flowing seamlessly from traditional hip-hop beats to big-band horns and southern soul, all under Slim's poetic and revelatory verses.

It isn't surprising to hear that the whole process was pretty organic. Hang out with the pair and it's obvious they have a great rapport -- joking, talking about barbecue, recounting interesting times in the studio. It's hard to believe they met only in 2013 after working together on "See You Leave," a track off of RJ's solo album, "More Than Isn't." Philly RB singer Khari Matteen also is featured on the song. Matteen had previously worked with both Slim and RJ and became the bridge that linked them.

"We kept in touch and then we started sending some stuff around, talking about making some music," RJ recalled, lounging in a lawn chair in his Overbrook Farms back yard. "We didn't go into it deciding, 'Let's make an album!' It wasn't like that. We just started making songs."

RJ would send rough loops from his home studio, and Slim would lay down his verses at DJ/producer Bear-One's Philly studio, even demo-ing vocals for the choruses (despite claims that he "can't sing worth nothing"). RJ would then build on that composition.

"To me the funnest part was getting back those initial demos, because it was like a little Christmas present," RJ said. "Each time, it was a realization of something you didn't know could be there."

The first song they did this way was "4/20," a cannabis-praising slow-jam, written on April 20, 2014, and released the same day a year later. It features Slim's hazily sanguine raps like, "The calendar says 4/20 / That's reason to celebrate."

"I hate to say it was easy, but it was natural," Slim recalled. "Nothing was forced. We were never trying to make a single. We were just making music. It was fun."

By November 2014, they had a batch of songs worthy enough to package into a full-length -- but also worth keeping under the radar until the project was complete. That was a daunting task given the ease of posting songs online, and especially because Slim comes from a "mixtape world" where it's standard to release tracks as they're completed.

"This is a whole body of work that should be heard together," Slim said. "So the process of putting it out was a lot different. This article is from wwwphilly.comIt kind of opened up my eyes to a whole new world of how to do this thing."

"Your first instinct is, 'We're proud of this song, we want the world to hear it,'" RJ mirrored. "So, your first instinct is to go put it on the Internet tomorrow. And I think that's the hardest part of the whole thing, just knowing you have to curb yourself, that instinct, for the sake of keeping everything together."

And it worked.

For the first time, Slim noted getting feedback on the album's cadence front to back. Many remarked on his lyrics, the fact that he talks about his mother, home life, his family's restaurant in Atlanta. For RJ, after working on a solo album, this marked a return to his collaborative efforts.

While this would seem to set the stage for a high-caliber tour, it's just not in the stars. RJ's focused on raising his son, but will perform one-off dates -- like June's Firefly Festival, in Dover -- and try to get Slim on the bill.

It all goes back to the nature of their working relationship and the respect the men have for each other as artists.

"Everything he [RJD2] says about music is probably going to be better than what I know," Slim said. "I write. If you take the beat away, I still write. He makes music. So, for him to take my words and my ideas and expound on them, and show me how to execute them better, those are lessons I'll take with me forever."

Mann concert shows why everyone likes Ed Sheeran

At 24, the cherubic, redheaded Ed Sheeran has shown dexterity as an artist and as a chart-topper, with a blend of folk and soul (occasionally tipped with hip-hop rhythms) with undeniable nods to American culture (example: his tune "The A-Team"). His affiliations further show his flexibility.

He covered Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" during the 2012 Summer Olympics. He has cowritten several hits with One Direction, and he has toured with Taylor Swift. Sheeran has also worked with drum-and-bass god Goldie and weird rapper Lupe Fiasco. Altogether, these make Sheeran a goofy, lovable chap to everyone, as seen in his show Tuesday night at the Mann Center.

With an acoustic guitar (strummed hard, plucked tenderly, beaten rhythmically) and a live looping system as backing, Sheeran's tone was full and dynamic. Kudos to his sound crew for turning up the bass, giving Sheeran a bottom, and keeping proceedings rich. That groove counted most on rushing medleys like "Don't"/"Loyal"/"No Diggity"/"Nina," in which he coolly mixed and mashed his own sweetly pleading tunes with music by Chris Brown and Blackstreet. Sheeran also did a buoyant back-and-forth among his confessional "Take It Back" (the apt lyrics include "I'm not a rapper, I'm a singer with a flow"), Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," and Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine."

During that latter medley, one weakness arose. This article is from wwwphilly.comMany of his hits have no real melody or chorus, and his cover mash-ups were somewhat devoid of tunefulness. His versions of well-known hits relied heavily on people's memories of the melodies, rather than the melodies themselves.

But he put them over: Sheeran was nothing if not a rouser. He got the mixed-age crowd singing along early, with the jaunty "Lego House" and the hard, fast "I'm a Mess." Watching Sheeran punkishly attack his guitar was a joy, as he wrenched new-jack funk and folk from a story of faith and ebullient romance. He pushed that sense of passionate play into ballads like the softly chaotic "Give Me Love" and "Bloodstream" - this last a growling, sexy song, with Sheeran bringing his voice down an octave and purring lines such as "I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream / Tell me when it kicks in." Maybe Sheeran should go places like this more often. For now, he's doing pretty good.

How To Get On Camera At A Sporting Event

5/28/2015

Every fan that attends live sporting events has a little part of them that wishes to make it on television during the broadcast of the game. Even the shyest and most reserved of fans may find themselves acting a little bit zany when the camera person comes by. But with droves of like-minded sports fanatics out there doing anything and everything to get on the tube, how would the average Joe or Jane compete? This article will give you a few tips to keep in mind at sporting events!

First of all, do not, under any circumstances, annoy the camera person. Taping the fans, the concourses and the other "fluff" features of a game is often a tiring and thankless job. The camera person wants to have their work reflect fun and excitement, not have it feature over the top and ridiculously madcap fans acting out of control. If you see a camera person approaching, it's important to act as natural as possible. It's okay to look at the camera and cheer and dance, but don't race up and start acting like an animal. The unnecessary footage will be cut, and you will look silly in front of everyone else!

Secondly, try to wear something distinctive to the game that will attract the camera person's eye and make for good television. At a Philadelphia Phillies game this summer, a group of 20 somethings all wore Hawaiian leis and made giant signs spelling out "Go Victorino" to honor the team's All Star center fielder who hails from Hawaii. The fans got on television because they were funny and exciting, all while being classy.

Finally, a good way to get on television is to do something extraordinary. Propose to your girlfriend, or streak in center field. Just kidding about the last one!

italian weight loss diet

5/26/2015

(Reuters Health) - A Mediterranean diet with extra nuts and olive oil might help improve memory in older adults, a Spanish study suggests, though the results aren't definitive and more research is needed.

"This small study found that a Mediterranean diet, which is low in animal foods like meat and butter, and high in vegetables, legumes and whole grains, when supplemented with olive oil or nuts is associated with improved cognitive function," Samantha Heller, a nutritionist at New York University's Center for Musculoskeletal Care and Sports Performance who wasn't involved in the study, said by email.

While previous research has linked a Mediterranean diet to a reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers, as well as lower odds of developing Alzheimer's disease, scientists haven't conclusively proven that the diet itself is responsible, rather than other lifestyle choices made by people who eat this way.

In the current study, Dr. Emilo Ros of the lipid clinic, endocrinology and nutrition service at Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, and colleagues set out to establish a stronger link between the Mediterranean diet and better cognitive function.

They randomly assigned 447 older adults at risk for cardiovascular disease to follow one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with one liter of extra virgin olive oil a week, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with 30 grams of nuts a day, or a low-fat diet.

At the start of the study, participants were around 67 years old and typically overweight, but not obese. Many of them had high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

All the subjects had cognitive function tests at the start of the study, but only 334 of them, or about 75 percent, completed a second round of brain evaluations at the end of the trial (after around four years of follow-up) to assess the impact of the diets. Dropouts were equally distributed among the three diet groups, and had slightly worse cognitive function at the start of the study than the participants who stuck with the experiment.

Based on the brain function tests done before and after the study, the group eating low-fat foods had a significant decrease in memory and cognitive function.

The group following a Mediterranean diet with supplemental nuts had significant improvements in memory, while the group adding extra virgin olive oil experienced significantly better cognitive function.

In terms of an actual diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, however, the researchers only identified 37 people who developed that condition during the study, and the diets didn't have a significant effect on the risk for that diagnosis.

To be sure, the study was small and the group receiving two cognitive function tests was even smaller, the researchers acknowledge in JAMA Internal Medicine. The data was also taken from a larger study that wasn't designed to examine brain function, and it's hard to say which aspect of the Mediterranean diet might help prevent cognitive decline, the authors wrote.

"This diet study is much better than purely observational ones, but it is far from one that provides definitive evidence," Dr. David Knopman, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, said by email.

While the researchers describe the antioxidant-rich foods in a Mediterranean diet as potentially protecting against cognitive decline, "the evidence to data that pure antioxidants such as vitamin E have an impact on some specific process related to cognitive aging is very, very slim," said Knopman, who wasn't involved in the study.

The brain is 70 percent fat, and gets fats from foods people eat, Heller said. One of the most common fats in the brain is oleic acid, an unsaturated fat found in nuts, olive oil, sunflower seeds and avocados. Omega-3 fatty acids are also important for brain health, and found in fish, walnuts and soy foods.

"These healthy fats have been shown to improve cognitive function and brain health," Heller said. "Conversely, research suggests that eating unhealthy fats like trans fats found in processed foods, and saturated fats in animal foods accelerated cognitive decline, poor memory, and is linked with an increased risk of dementia."
